Amigos Mexican Restaurant Granted Special Use Permit for Liquor Sales
Frankfort Village Board Meeting | April 6, 2026
Article Summary: A long-standing Frankfort restaurant will soon offer a full bar menu following the Village Board’s approval of a Special Use Permit, subject to specific interior remodeling conditions.
Amigos Mexican Restaurant Key Points:
-
Ordinance No. 3557 grants a Special Use Permit for liquor sales to Amigos Mexican Restaurant at 20831 S. LaGrange Road.
-
The applicant must construct a partition wall to physically separate the new 136-square-foot bar area from the main dining room.
-
Food sales must continue to comprise the majority of the restaurant’s overall revenue.
The Frankfort Village Board on Monday, April 6, 2026, approved a Special Use Permit allowing Amigos Mexican Restaurant to begin serving alcohol, provided the business completes a required interior renovation to separate its bar and dining spaces.
The restaurant, located at 20831 S. LaGrange Road in the Frankfort Town Center shopping plaza, has operated in the B-2 Community Business District for six years. Applicant Norma Ortiz petitioned the Village to add liquor sales to help grow the business.
Because the Village Zoning Ordinance requires a Special Use Permit to operate a full-service restaurant with liquor sales in a B-2 district, the Plan Commission previously reviewed the request and attached several strict operational conditions to ensure the establishment remains primarily a family dining destination rather than a tavern.
Trustee Jessica Petrow outlined the conditions mandated by Ordinance No. 3557 before the Board’s unanimous vote.
“At the time of building permit issuance for the bar area renovation, the applicant shall install a partition wall or a similar physical improvement that delineates the bar area from the dining area,” Petrow stated. “Until such time that the partition wall or similar physical improvement is installed, the proposed bar area shall be limited to use as a service bar only.”
Furthermore, the ordinance mandates that the business must maintain food sales as the majority of its total revenue, and two televisions currently located in the dining room must be relocated behind the new bar area. The planned bar area will measure 136 square feet with eight seats, remaining well under the Village’s maximum allowance of 330 square feet and 12 seats for a tenant space of that size.
