Meeting Summary and Briefs: Frankfort Park District for August 12, 2025
The Frankfort Park District Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, approved a significant construction change order for the Fort Frankfort project and received updates on the use of federal grant funds and upcoming community events. The board’s primary action was the approval of a net cost increase of over $19,000 for the Fort Frankfort renovation to add safety stairs and accommodate updated equipment requirements. (A full story on the project changes is available.)
Commissioners also reviewed the district’s finances, discussed the status of grant applications for electric vehicle charging stations, and heard summaries of successful summer programs and plans for the fall season.
Bills and Payroll Approved: The board voted to approve the payment of accounts payable and payroll for the period ending July 31, 2025, in the amount of $367,045.93. The approval followed a brief overview from Superintendent of Finance Regina Ross-Ellison and discussion on report formatting. The motion by Commissioner Mark Ponton passed by a 4-0 roll call vote.
ARPA Funds Used for HVAC System: The Park District has utilized federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds received from Will County to cover the $72,500 cost of an HVAC system replacement for the Founders Gym. According to Executive Director Gina Hassett, staff is now working to spend the remaining $25,000 from the grant on additional HVAC repairs and other qualifying reimbursement items before the funds expire.
EV Charging Station Grant Update: The district was unsuccessful in its recent grant application to fund the installation of electric vehicle charging stations at Commissioners Park near Fort Frankfort, according to Edward Newton, Superintendent of Building and Grounds. He noted that the district plans to reapply for funding during the next application cycle in October and will incorporate the charging stations and related infrastructure into future plans.
Upcoming Fall Programs and Events: The district’s fall program brochure is being mailed to residents this week, with registration set to open on August 19. Upcoming events include the Back to School Bash on August 14 at Commissioners Park and an After Hours Party at the Splash Park on August 18, which will feature jumpies and pizza.
Building and Grounds Department Staffing: The Building and Grounds department continues to manage its workload while being down one employee, Superintendent Edward Newton reported. He stated that interviews for the open position are ongoing, though many initial applicants were not qualified. The department’s maintenance staff has also been busy assisting with setup for the district’s numerous special events.
