The New Lenox Fire Protection District Board of Trustees took decisive action on a residential fire code variance and discussed a new community partnership for a planned solar farm during its meeting Monday.

Citing a significant safety risk, the board unanimously denied a variance request for a home at 435 Old Hickory Road that is located 1,657 feet from the nearest fire hydrant, far exceeding the 300-foot distance mandated by the district’s code. Trustees stated the denial was necessary to protect residents and firefighters and to avoid setting a dangerous precedent.

In new business, the board discussed a community benefit agreement with the developer of a future solar farm on Spencer Road. The agreement includes a proposed $35,000 grant to the fire district for the purchase of a Utility Task Vehicle (UTV), which would be used to access tight areas between the solar panels for safety and maintenance.

Station 62 Remodel Update: The district is continuing to work with Northern Builders on an agreement for the planned addition and remodel of Fire Station 62. Fire officials expect the agreement will be ready for presentation and board action at the July meeting.

Hiring Process Continues: Fire Commissioner Marty Terlep reported that the district’s hiring process is active. Commissioners recently approved a conditional offer for one candidate, W. Richardson, after a background check. They also conducted interviews with seven other candidates to establish a new eligibility list for future hiring.

Trustee Popp Appointed to Pension Board: The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of fellow Trustee Popp to serve on the New Lenox Fire Protection District’s Pension Board.

Financial Report: The treasurer’s report for the period ending May 31, 2025, showed a beginning cash balance of over $6.5 million. After receipts of $592,569 and disbursements of $1,127,149, the ending cash balance was $6,024,855. As of June 16, the district’s cash on deposit stood at $5,452,813.

Equipment and Maintenance: Fire Chief Adam Riegel reported that a new air compressor, approved at a previous meeting, has arrived and will be installed at Station 1 on June 19. He also noted that roof repairs at Station 1 were scheduled to be completed this week.
